Amazon operationsHow to tell a Buy Box loss from a demand drop
Revenue can fall because fewer shoppers arrived or because your offer stopped winning the Buy Box. These signals help separate the two.
Revenue fell, but the product page may still be attracting the same number of shoppers.
That distinction matters. A demand problem and a Buy Box problem can look identical in total sales, yet the sensible responses are completely different.
Amazon now calls the Buy Box the Featured Offer. Sellers still search for and use both terms, and Amazon's Sales and Traffic API still labels the field buyBoxPercentage.
Begin with two metrics
Open the Detail Page Sales and Traffic report for the affected child ASINs. Compare sessions and Featured Offer percentage over the same complete dates.
| Signal | Demand or traffic loss | Featured Offer loss |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions | Usually down | Often steady |
| Featured Offer percentage | Often steady | Down |
| Units and sales | Down | Down |
| Unit Session Percentage | May hold | Often falls for your offer |
| Competing offer | May be unchanged | Often more competitive or more available |
Real accounts do not always produce a clean textbook pattern. This table tells you which branch deserves the first check.
What a Featured Offer loss looks like
The product detail page continues to receive sessions, but your offer appears less often beside the main Add to Cart and Buy Now actions. Shoppers can still buy from another seller.
That produces a recognizable sequence:
- Sessions remain near their normal range
- Featured Offer percentage falls
- Your units and revenue fall
- Unit Session Percentage for your seller falls with them
Check the detail page directly, but do not rely on one moment. Offer ownership can change during the day. Use the report to understand the period and the live page to understand what is happening now.
Why the Featured Offer changed
Price is one possibility. It is not the whole system.
Amazon tells sellers to consider total price, shipping speed, delivery-date certainty, stock, and the quality of the order experience. An offer can also be ineligible because its price appears too high or too low. Amazon's Featured Offer guide explains these factors.
Check them in this order:
- Availability: Is your SKU in stock and purchasable?
- Offer eligibility: Does Pricing Health or Manage All Inventory show a problem?
- Total landed price: Include shipping and any promotion that ended.
- Delivery promise: Did the displayed arrival date get worse?
- Competing sellers: Did another offer become cheaper or faster?
- Account health: Is there a fulfillment or seller-performance issue?
A price cut only helps when price is the issue. Cutting it before checking availability or delivery can give away margin without restoring the Featured Offer.
What a demand drop looks like
When demand weakens, fewer shoppers reach the product detail page. Sessions fall while Featured Offer percentage may remain close to its usual level.
The next questions are about traffic:
- Did search demand fall across the category?
- Did organic placement change?
- Did advertising impressions, clicks, or spend fall?
- Did a promotion or shopping event end?
- Is the movement seasonal?
- Is the decline concentrated in one ASIN or spread across the catalog?
If competitors in the same category appear to be moving normally, look closer at your product's traffic sources. If the whole category moved, changing the offer may do little.
The mixed case
Sometimes both happen. Sessions fall, Featured Offer percentage falls, and conversion weakens at the same time.
Do not force the data into one explanation. Estimate the contribution of each change and fix the most direct operational problem first. Restoring stock or offer eligibility is usually more controllable than recovering category demand.
The shortest useful diagnosis
Write the conclusion in one sentence:
Sales fell mainly because sessions were steady while Featured Offer percentage dropped from its normal range across three high-volume child ASINs.
Or:
Featured Offer percentage held, but sessions declined across the category after the promotional period ended.
One points toward the offer. The other points toward traffic. That is enough to stop the wrong fix from going live.
